M. D'Souza

Syria has become a haven, where jihadists of various shades -- Sunnis (Hamas, Palestinian Terror conglomerate), Shiites (Hizbullah), al Qaeda, etal. -- congregate.

Syria has granted refuge for Hamas terror masters. Syria is a way-station for foreign al Qaeda jihadists proceeding towards Iraq to participate in jihad. Syria has also been a way-side depot for Iranian missiles, rockets and deadly warfare materials proceeding towards Iran's satellite state of Hizbullistan in Lebanon.

One wonders what Syria's Bashar al-Assad is doing straddling this flimsy collaboration fence. Do the Israeli leaders want to mount on this flimsy fence to negotiate with a wayward Assad? That will be a sight to behold -- both of them coming tumbling down the Golan Heights waving white flags.

Assad will not be spared by the Islamists if he negotiates peace with Israel, even though the Golan Heights will be returned to him.

There's going to be real danger for Israel should Israel cede the Golan Heights, because that will be the staging platform for terrorists to attack Israel.

So, let's get the names of the people that can really lead the country in the right direction and with G-d's will, we will throw out the horrid people in power and put in people that will do the right thing and follow Hashem.

Well, I agree with M. D'Souza halfaway, to the extent that Syria today is definitely not the Syria of the older Assad and, moreover, it can hardly be thought of as an Islamic country - and it probably never will be.

As to your post, "to talk" is not "to act". Israel can talk to Syria about the Golan Heights, and at the same time get inputs from all Arab states as to their reactions to such talks. Which is good. I am willing to bet that contrary to the 'common sense' assumption that Arab reactions to these talk would be unequivocally positive, their reactions will be unequivocally different, to say the least. It has happened before. There isn't such a thing as an 'Arab consensus' on anything. They can't even agree on what time of the day it is.

Talking to Syria about returning the Golan Heights is a far cry from "surrendering to Damascus". In light of the fact, furthermore, that this story of Hezbollah is now becoming an expensive proposition for Syria's mentor and protege' - Iran. It is the news of a couple of days ago the Iran is now funding some USD 700 million to Help Hezbollah rebuild Lebanon, in hopes of maintaining Hezbollah's philantropic image among the Lebanese, and thus retaining their support. Which calls into question who has really won this conflict.

Israel has not won, as it fell short of its original objective of eradicating Hezbollah. But if I were Nasrallah, I'd think twice before declaring victory. If at anytime that Hezbollah launches katyushas onto Israel, Israel retaliates and inflicts USD 700 million worth of damages onto Lebanon - heck, sooner or later Iran is going to go bankrupt!

I fail to understand why so many Israeli commentators don't realize - or pretend not to realize - that wars are not won solely on the battlefield, but also economically. Let me make an example, here. There is no doubt that America lost the Vietnam War. But was that really a victory for the Vietnamese? They suffered 2 million dead (the ones that could be counted - then there are the ones whose remains were never found), the country was devastated by napalm, their jungles poisoned for years by the effects of Agent Orange, thousands of survivors gave birth to thousands of deformed children because of the effects of the dioxine contained in chemicals sprayed and dropped by USAF all over their villages, and finally it took the country 25 years overall to return to the twilight of civilization. So, let me ask again, was that really a victory for the Vietnamese?

The same goes for the Middle East. The next time Hezbollah launches rockets, all Israel has to do is to double IAF targets and inflict USD 1.4 billion worth of damages. To this tune, there won't be anymore Ahmadinejad around. Besides, the more money Iran has to spend to help Hezbollah politically, the less money Iran has available to implement its nuclear ambitions.

Which makes an awful good sense to me,in the context of the geopolitical situation of the region.

Bishop, Bobby E. Ward

I will like to reflect that the war Israel thinks it lost was not really lost. However, let me say the same results will happen again if Israel and the United States do not get their heads together and realize that the enemy in the middle east is the entire population and not just a select few. As we all see and better get into our head, is that supporters, including women and old people alike is an enemy. It is impossible for Israel to fight another battle and win when the enemy is the civillian force, and Israel refuse to shoot or boom certain areas. We see the cheering and support coming from the same people we consider innocence. Yet these so-called innocence provide back up and support. Their belief is the same as the enemy. That is, to do away with Israel and the United states.

Israel also allowed too much of the american news media into too much of their military business. The media showed too much and spoke to often of "Innocence civillian death' that made it appear to look like Israel was targeting innocence civillians.

We are not living in the past any more where the military combatants can meet in a open field. Hisbullah has figured this out. They have figured out our weakness to sparing so-called innocence civillians and is now using this to defeat us. "Hide within the population, they want shoot, they say! This way we can run from house to house and fight them forever". "If they attack us again, we will do the same".

This is the way Hisbullah is thinking, and if the mind set of Israel and the US don't change, this will only get worse and worse.

Returning the Golan Heights to Syria in light of the recent aggression perpetrated against Israel is insanity. It is wistful and dangerous to believe appeasement will add to Israel's security. Such actions would in actuality be the sowing of the seeds for Israel's destruction. This cannot be G_d's will.

It was only one year ago....that Gush Katif was dismantled and turned over,---in what I regard as as act of appeasement--to the Palestinians. What has occurred since that time? Hamas, became the official government party..which the Palestinian people put into power.and that such a government together with Hizpollah, Iran and Syria is committed to the destruction of the Jewish State. If the idea of turning the Golan Heights back to Syria would even be considered....such actions would prove disastrous to Israel.
What has been a certainty, both in the past, and especially so at this time.. is that "land for peace" is an abdication of responsibility...which is continuously doomed to fail: our enemies desire the demise of the State of Israel...no more nor less than that. .

You know, there's more white in Israel's flag than any other color. But considering how Israel has been behaving toward terrorism for the last 10 years, they should change their white to yellow. Yellow suits them and would give them something to rally behind. I mean, they don't mean "Never Again!" anymore, having changed it to "Not Again?". Jews have lost the will to live. They are ripe for destruction. The nation of Israel will soon be changed to the nation of Ishmael. The Arabs have whipped your ass! Not because the Arabs are stronger or smarter, but because you are like your leader, Olmert, who is tired of fighting. If only you WOULD FIGHT, but you won't. You'll go quietly in the night wimpering your woe-is-me which the rest of the world mocks you for. The world only respects one thing: Strength, Courage. You have lost both.

Robert Speirs

The issue of Israeli Arabs spying for Hamas and Hezbollah also must be addressed. How about this - when Arab countries allow Jews to live there, Israel will allow Arabs to live in Israel. Until then - no Arabs. It's a matter not of "racism" but of life or death.

Eric

To Robert Speirs:

You have a good observation and a good suggestion for Israel. That is, when Arab nations allow Jews to live within them, then Israel will allow Arabs to live within Israel. Otherwise, kick the Arabs out. The Arabs may be racist bigots, as they mock the Jew calling them monkeys, etc. The Arabs are definately religious bigots. For example, try taking a Bible into Saudi Arabia. Why should America let Islam flourish here when Arabs won't let Christianity flourish in their countries?

Luigi Frascati

Hi Eric,

respecting your last quote "Why should America let Islam flourish here when Arabs won't let Christianity flourish in their countries?" - I believe the simple answer is "Because America is not an Islamic country" ... not yet, that is .... (just kidding).

kim

Israel should not give one shred of land over to any of these fanatics.

Is our little speck of soil so important compaired to the vastness of the Arab countries? Obviously, they have more land than they know what to do with, hense their obsession with Israel.

Giving into their tantrums would be like never disciplining a two year old-they become worse...Arabs will never let us Jews live peacefully in any of their countries (as we see with those poor Iranian Jews who are still stuck) They don't even let us, Jews, live peacefully in our own land!

We need to have tunnel vision-finish the job once and for all-Hamas (big deal if it was elected democratically-Hitler was too) should be the area of focus for the UN(yes I know this is unrealistic) I've reached my limit for tolerance, really I have-just watch memri.org. The UN needs to watch it...

I thank all the Israeli troops, with all my heart for their bravery; it's because of you that my kids will have Israel to come to; you are heros to us!

Eric

Hi Luigi,

Yes, thank God that America is a free country, and we let other religions flourish here. But if Islam has its way, it will NOT let Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, or any other ism flourish. Are Americans being foolish to let a known killer-religion flourish in America, knowing that Islam kills all other religions when it gains power? I think we should consider Islam to mean: I-slam. Islam slams all who do not bow the knee to Allah. At least it tries to.

This was the BEST insight into the reality of what is going on. Hey Israel, Your left wing governmental egomaniacs are volunteering you for national suicide in order for Olmert and gang to save their image. AWFUL!

Demand Syria pay war damages to Isarel and her citizens in a unprovoked attack;as Syria supplied all the arms &amminutions to destroy Israel!

The Golan Heghts has been a contentious issue for some time. At present there is no reconsideration on this. The Generals of the Israeli Defence Forces intended to create a strategic buffer zone at the time. To this day the Golan heights has been used as that and equally the same with South Lebanon. I shall explain with clarity why.
The strategic buffer zones were required to stop the agression seen on a regular and frequent basis from lebanon as well as Syria. These buffer zones were to stop these from happening and to protect the people of Israel.

Israel today has the Iranian contention to deal with. It is time to take pre emptive action to restore Israeli deterent to normal levels. Proliferation in Iran is happening on a near daily occurance. Complacency on this or even the nuclear Iran issue is not an option.
The Government of Israel has to show strong leadership.
At present there can be no further withdrawals from these areas because as what the Generals stated at the time knowing that these were Buffer Zones. I refer to the Golan Heights and South Lebanon.

These people were supported and finance by the Iranians with Syria being conduits.
Today the people of Israel are looking at the dawn of a new Era. I hope that the Olmert Government would show strong and resolute leadership.

The UN as we now know and as I have said before are on an observation role only. The mandate wouldn't even dis arm Hezbollah. To this effect we can see that 1701 is unworkable.

The Olmert Government has to concentrate on the proliferation concerns from Iran.
I anticipate that between 7-10billion shekles would be needed to cover the Iranian campaign. This has to be approved by the Knesset for budgetary approval.

I believe that if strong leadership can be shown the Olmert GOVERNMENT can be successful.

Why?????What IS WRONG with the Israeli government that it can not see what my three year old son can understand??? You must have much more experience with the muslim mindset over there than we could possibly have here, and yet....your government chooses to project its own naivity and judeo-western values continually on to derranged and dangerous fanatics who lie with impunity and kill their own children in their hunger for world domination. WHY???????????????Oh, and another thing: stop appologizing for stuff you are not sure you are guilty of (and even when 'guilty', be judicious with the apologies!!)Media opinion is so fickle...the damage in Qana and with the "bombed ambulance"and the "reuters press vehicle" and countless other "atrocities" is done in the opinion of the world if your government apologizes. Again- why this inane policy? Investigate first. Then if need be accept responsibility. From my position here, it gets harder by the day to defend Israel to my colleagues and friends, not because of what any arab is doing, but because of your suicidal government.

That will be a sight to behold -- both of them coming tumbling down the Golan Heights waving white flags.
